Annotations: The Iroquois Creation Story

*The Iroquois were made up of the Mohawk, Seneca, Oneida, Onondaga, and Cayuga nations. Soon it became the Six Nations. (Tuscarora joined.)

~Also known as People of the Longhouse (their houses looked like lengthy greenhouses.)

*The creation of this tribe consists of 25 different theories. The earliest version was taken down by the Frenchman Gabriel Sagard in 1623 from the Huron.

~ David Cusick was born around 1780 on the Oneida Reservation in New York. (Is from the tribe,Tuscarora, and his father was Christian. Most of them were after the year of 1820.

* D. Cusick was an artist and a doctor, and his work represented Iroquoian culture. He thinks that it's better to call the creation story a piece history, instead of a myth. His version is used because he is a Native, recorded such things, and his work is easy to access.

~ The upper world sunk down towards the dark world when the concieved woman fell asleep. The monsters took care of her. She lands safely, without any harm. (The mysterious and dangerous affairs represents the to-become universe.

*While holding her, the turtle increased every moment and became a considerable island of earth with bushes. The woman was still concieved under distress and in total darkness. One of the twins are evil, so he planned to not to be born the other way, but to burst out of his mother's side to kill her. The woman was in serious pain, and soon after died and gave birth to the twins.

~ The twins did not need the care of a nurse because they were super-human. Enigorio possessed a gentle disposition and his name meant, "the good mind". The other possessed disrespectful qualities and his name was Enigonhahetgea, known as the bad mind.

* The good mind wasn't intending to stay in the dark world, but he wanted to create a great light inside of it, but the bad mind wanted it to stay in it's natural state. The good mind creates an orb out of his mother's head and makes it into the sun, formed another orb from the body and made it the moon, The body of the good mind represented the cloud of legs in an orb, which I guess he turned into the heavens. He created newer spots of light, and he also kept creating new things, and this was all done on the Island of the Turtle.

Wait! With such mythology and other unreal things said, how dare they put the beginning of Christianity's creation of mankind into their own story?! That's ridculous. They believe in so many gods and different unrealities, but they incorporated this story into their own? Thus,
this story must be false. The only reason why the Native Americans known about Christian beliefs was because of the colonists that came from Europe and colonized America. Since the Iroquois found out about the beginning of God's creations very well AFTER they were created, then explain why they incorporated their existence with something they just found out from the people of the other world and "supposedly" the Iroquois knew this since the beginning of their tribe? This essay is false. That's like me trying to say that I was born in Ingalls Hospital, but I wanted to say that I had a triplet just because I just learned what it was some years ago. It's not right. And it's not logical. The end of the essay.

~ Okay, I read the rest of the essay. It is sort of Christian based. The evil twin represented Satan, also known as the evil one, and God represents the good one, who created all things and restored good after evil. That's how I know the English colonists influenced their story. It's a twist of the Iroquois' confused version, with the known version of Christianity. They made their half up to go with the Christian version and values that were forced on them by colonists. It was mentioned in AP U.S. History about the effects of Christianity on the Native Americans.
