Essay: The Iroquois Creation Story

Every culture has some type of beginning, and we all have our own beliefs how the Earth, this entire universe, or even a certain group of people came into existence, thus, leading to a story entailing the whereabouts of creation. For Christians, we believe that God created the heavens and the Earth, some believe that we evolved from primates, and others believe that they were created by a woman who gave birth to two twins! So which belief is that? Why, it's the Iroquois, of course! Throughout the story, the Iroquois detail about how they were created, and how the things around them became how they were, also.

Annotations: The Iroquois Creation Story

*The Iroquois were made up of the Mohawk, Seneca, Oneida, Onondaga, and Cayuga nations. Soon it became the Six Nations. (Tuscarora joined.)

~Also known as People of the Longhouse (their houses looked like lengthy greenhouses.)

*The creation of this tribe consists of 25 different theories. The earliest version was taken down by the Frenchman Gabriel Sagard in 1623 from the Huron.

~ David Cusick was born around 1780 on the Oneida Reservation in New York. (Is from the tribe,Tuscarora, and his father was Christian. Most of them were after the year of 1820.

* D. Cusick was an artist and a doctor, and his work represented Iroquoian culture. He thinks that it's better to call the creation story a piece history, instead of a myth. His version is used because he is a Native, recorded such things, and his work is easy to access.

~ The upper world sunk down towards the dark world when the concieved woman fell asleep. The monsters took care of her. She lands safely, without any harm. (The mysterious and dangerous affairs represents the to-become universe.

*While holding her, the turtle increased every moment and became a considerable island of earth with bushes. The woman was still concieved under distress and in total darkness. One of the twins are evil, so he planned to not to be born the other way, but to burst out of his mother's side to kill her. The woman was in serious pain, and soon after died and gave birth to the twins.

~ The twins did not need the care of a nurse because they were super-human. Enigorio possessed a gentle disposition and his name meant, "the good mind". The other possessed disrespectful qualities and his name was Enigonhahetgea, known as the bad mind.

* The good mind wasn't intending to stay in the dark world, but he wanted to create a great light inside of it, but the bad mind wanted it to stay in it's natural state. The good mind creates an orb out of his mother's head and makes it into the sun, formed another orb from the body and made it the moon, The body of the good mind represented the cloud of legs in an orb, which I guess he turned into the heavens. He created newer spots of light, and he also kept creating new things, and this was all done on the Island of the Turtle.

Wait! With such mythology and other unreal things said, how dare they put the beginning of Christianity's creation of mankind into their own story?! That's ridculous. They believe in so many gods and different unrealities, but they incorporated this story into their own? Thus,
this story must be false. The only reason why the Native Americans known about Christian beliefs was because of the colonists that came from Europe and colonized America. Since the Iroquois found out about the beginning of God's creations very well AFTER they were created, then explain why they incorporated their existence with something they just found out from the people of the other world and "supposedly" the Iroquois knew this since the beginning of their tribe? This essay is false. That's like me trying to say that I was born in Ingalls Hospital, but I wanted to say that I had a triplet just because I just learned what it was some years ago. It's not right. And it's not logical. The end of the essay.

~ Okay, I read the rest of the essay. It is sort of Christian based. The evil twin represented Satan, also known as the evil one, and God represents the good one, who created all things and restored good after evil. That's how I know the English colonists influenced their story. It's a twist of the Iroquois' confused version, with the known version of Christianity. They made their half up to go with the Christian version and values that were forced on them by colonists. It was mentioned in AP U.S. History about the effects of Christianity on the Native Americans.

Is Google Making Us Stupid?

Math help? Google it. Language converter? Google it. Hooked already? Stay on it! But if you have AP- LIVE ON IT!!! Just the other day I was giving into my Google craze, getting help after advice after another simple trick to hold on to the tethers of my fast-pace moving classes in AP. The upside to me keeping my place in Advanced Placement? It's better to pay 82 dollars than to pay thousands for the same course in college, I always say. But every time I get another assignment, the Google craze gets even worse- maybe it's making us lax in what we do. I haven't touched any of my textbooks or novels without the help of Google leading me to shortcuts to understand the work, or the much-needed help of Sparknotes on a daily basis. Is Google Making Us Stupid?! The answer could be seen as more relaxed than usual. In other words, yes.

In the article, Dave, an astronaut who works for NASA, explains why Google is a serious problem if you over-use it. The effects are somewhat deadly- you start to get less attentive, sentences seem to be more complex, and then before you know it, you're as smart as a fifth grader- or maybe you're already badly off into the fix.
"The Web has been a godsend to me as a writer. For more than a decade now, I have been spending a lot of time online."
It's not just ordinary students who use the widely searched Internet base, but it's also people that have great professions. Without the normal and old-fashioned way of doing things, the Internet makes us lack concentration and deep thinking into our assignments, as well as our problems in life. Fine example- I didn't read this entire story because my attention couldn't hold. I thoroughly read the jist of it, and then after the rest, I lightly skimmed over it until I painfully finished till the end. Another analysis? The time I spend with my friend, Mellody. On Google, you can look up anything that will please your mind. From Demi Lovato's Twitter, to my addiction of Fall Out Boy, just the simplest things to pass the time away! Getting rid of Google is like getting an infant to throw away his bottle for a new cup. Dave has the same problem as everyone else does! Has he and his colleagues turned foolish? How can this be prevented?

Wean yourself off of it. It's not simple, but it's possible. Three main sets of goals can be established in order for our society to get used to the original way of doing things. First, everyone can stop looking up unnecessary things on the website. It wastes time for something more important you can be doing. Secondly, use less time on the computer so that you will have more time to read or do anything you want to catch up on, like a sport or activity. All is preventable and the road may be hard, but if you don't live in a society that's completely online, then try to do it the way things are supposed to be. I myself have come up with an easy way to use both things. I from now on will only use Google for when I have to, and I will not use Sparknotes for something I have already read before. It's a waste, and there's so much to be done. As for Dave, the story on Google was actually a great read, and I think that his thoughts should be held with high regards. Since he knows what his issue and cause is, it's high time to find a solution.

Is Google Making Us Stupid? Probably so. This world of Western culture comes up with new technology every day, and soon things won't have to be done because machines will do it for us. Leonardo DaVinci, Aristotle, nor William Shakespeare succeeded this way. Their brilliance came from great talent and hard work, and without that, the world would be a lost hope of great theories, music, art, and other treasures that we still are holding on to today.

Pushing for Pink: The Flamingo Craze

Americans are people that keep up with the latest trends in style and technology that overflows are pop cultured world, and we love every minute of it. Perhaps for a sense of comfort, or even just to fit in, "whats hot" often gets carried away into an unhealthy pandemic. The essay, "The Plastic Pink Flamingo: A Natural History" recalls time's past craze, and what it says about Americans today.

Around the early-mid 1900's, travelers from the sunny state of Florida had come home with all sorts of things: new clothes, a great pair of sunglasses, and- a flamingo? According to Jennifer Price, the author of the article, she states that, the bird had become a symbol of luxury, and pizzazz. The Flamingo, Miami Beach's first grand hotel, created the fun filled idea of having the beautiful Flamingo as their symbol of "whats the new thing" in the hottest city in America. Eventually, other hotels decided to use this logo and it was a huge success. Many people loved the idea, and it spreaded across the country with the perception of the latest must have on your front lawn, your refrigerator door, and even your home appliances! Flashy things definitely attract people, I must say. Soon, companies started to make the flamingos in fun, neon type colors that attracted the human eye. Everyone was sucked into the Flamingo Era and who wouldn't want to be? Even Elvis had a pink Cadillac. But when does a frenzy gets out of control?

I believe that Jennifer Price wrote this article to show that Americans follow the latest trends, but most of the time, they go too far. We can compare this past-time logo, to the logo we are presently familar with- the Jordan sign. Jordans? I got them, my friends have them, people at school have them, and I'm sure everybody and their momma has them, too. Micheal Jordan has made a huge name for himsef throughout the entire world. But is this stuff even necessary? According to the Associated Press, the average amount of money spent on Jordan sneakers is around 130 dollars on average. Do you know what we can buy with that?! Perhaps some groceries for your house. Maybe a payment for your credit card. Or even money for school stuff needed, like supplies, and activity fees. These are all important factors that are more crucial than gym shoes. Many people forget what's important in life, and that is what Jennifer Price explains through her essay. Yeah, I just bought some a few months ago. But I can't even wear them everywhere without the fear of getting them messed up! Trends are fun, and you do get alot of attention, but trends go way too far sometimes, and it needs to be addressed.

Now looking back, the flamingo has been a great trend that represented how cool you were, a piece of luxury, and the sort of pizzazz to spice up your lawn. But what happens if you supported that trend now? Would be cheesy, and unclassy, wouldn't it. Trends come and go, but the necessities doesnt. So next time you're trying to keep up with the latest iMac, or "look", don't overdo it- because what you might think is nothing, can lead up to a great pandemic of you losing money for the more important things in life.

First Assignment: Diction- Composing Your Own Simile

"The blossoming apple tree was as beautiful as a groomed poodle." -fai_squared

In my simile, I chose to use the "as" approach in creating my unique simile. I chose an apple tree because the first thing that came to mind was the novel, Out of the Dust, in which I read when I was in middle school. Queer, but true. In the novel, fourteen year-old Billie Jo Kelby (I looked it up because I forgot.) often talked about her mother's beautiful apple trees and how lovely they were when they were in season. I didn't know that apple tress had fragranced flowers until I read this book. The smell of the tree was enticing to Billie, and the greatest moment came when her mother would make apple pies out of the apples from the tree.

Anyways- that's why I mentioned the blossoming apple tree. The beautiful part was put in because Billie described the trees in such a way that they couldn't be nothing short of elegance. (I hope I didn't overdo this assignment. :) ] Now for the groomed poodle... Who doesn't like poodles? They're pretty. And they are known in competitions because of their looks and grace that they present.

Blogger

Well, I so didn't expect for me to have a Blogger account, but it's worth it nevertheless. I wonder how this is gonna turn out. I never was a frevalent blogger like my friend Mellody, nor have I been under the computer trance like my past self. So we'll see how it goes. I didn't want a Twitter until I found out that Pete Wentz blogs every second of his life, and for that- I created one just about two days ago. It's nice to see what my celebs are doing. The point is that everything serves as a purpose. My Facebook is for my main fix of life, Myspace is dead technology to the other world I used to belong to, Twitter is for my beloved Fall Out Boy, and Blogger is for the sake of my grade! xD Hey- I might get used to this. Would be a great tool for a writer.
